The lack of clear answers around what work looks like post-Covid weighs more heavily on some people than others. Back-to-work anxiety is being felt by a broad spectrum of professionals who, for the past 12 months, have got used to working remotely and to different daily routines. Now, with the vaccine roll-out happening and offices gradually re-opening, these professionals are being asked to adapt once again.
Lockdown takes its toll
The mental health charity Mind found that more than half of adults (60%) and over two thirds of young people (68%) said their mental health got worse during lockdown. Young people and those with pre-existing mental health conditions were particularly affected – and employees who had been furloughed also reported a slight decline in their wellbeing compared to others. Put simply, a lot of employees will need support as the working landscape shifts once again.
Don’t repeat the mistakes of old
There is much talk from well-intentioned businesses about ensuring that the post-Covid working world does not replicate the mistakes of old. Certainly, mental health and wellbeing at work must be a key consideration.
Nooks already play an important role in offices across the world providing individuals with a space of calm and refuge away from the daily office buzz. Now, such provision is looking even more critical.
Withdrawal without isolation
Broad advice to business leaders includes creating space within the office for processing and sense-making. What we hear from Nook users is that Nooks deliver mindful withdrawal without isolating occupants. So, professionals can find peace and calm without necessarily having to make a point of visiting an area specifically designated for ‘chill-out’ or relaxation. It’s a more subtle, inclusive way of introducing mindfulness into the day.
Of course, it is not all about the provision of withdrawal space. Leaders must be open and communicative, sharing what they know with colleagues on a regular basis. Additionally, antennae must be tuned to any signs of discomfort or distress.
These are challenging times for everybody, and nobody truly knows what new working patterns will look like. But, let’s work together to make the emergence from lockdown as smooth and stress-free as possible. Your employees are your most valuable asset. Protecting their wellbeing now will serve to deliver long-term benefits to the overall health of your business.
Can Nook play a role in adding mindfulness and calm to your office-space? We’d love to talk.
